There was an article in the Indy today that talked about Zong!  and “Delusions of Whiteness in the Avant-Garde,” as well as touched on some of the themes we talked about in classI liked the last two sentences of the article:

“As American poets continue to grapple with the relevance of their art, a new, progressive, radical vision of poetry is necessary—one that defines poetry not as a departure from the human world, but rather as an immersion in, reckoning with, and resistance against this world in all its restrictions and failures.”

I read Ken’s review of the book when it came out, and was really grateful for him pointing out where Lerner’s whiteness and maleness are conditioning his expectations and desires for poetry. I’d love to hear what you think about Lerner’s approach?
